Most of us know at least one or two nurses and IMO they’re by far the hardest working people I’ve met. I can’t stress enough how much I respect what they do for a living and what they bring to society.
Our communities would completely fall apart without having professionals to do the tough job they’re tasked with.
I think too many nurses are hyper-focused on going to school, graduating and going to work for a hospital or a doctor.
There are so many opportunities for nurses to take that ridiculous work habit and put it to use in a business of their own.
Many simply don’t know about all of the businesses they can put their skills to use in. Or they just don’t think about running their own business.
There are a ton of ways to take the training and skills and increase income levels. Also, you can be your own boss.
All of that knowledge you must possess and comprehend to get through the grueling testing circuits can be put to use in business.
Nursing focused businesses can have so much opportunity do to the continuous demand in the healthcare industry.
It’s all about taking that knowledge and experience and applying it to something the public needs. Most people are afraid of running their own business because they look at it as an immense task but it’s not as terrifying as most think.
We’ve already gone over how valuable nurses are with the skills they possess. Newsflash, that’s all business is. Providing value to someone who needs what you offer.
How many of you have needed healthcare at some point in your lives?
Exactly.
Teach Aspiring Nurses

When you possess high level skills like nurses do, one of the best ways to make money off of it is by selling the knowledge to people who want it.
There’s an enormous amount of people who are aspiring to be nurses or maybe they just want to go through a safety/emergency course.
For example, if you offered something like a CPR training you would find many people that are willing to receive that.
I mean hell, when I was working my 9 to 5 my full-time employer paid someone like this to come in and teach 30+ people CPR. I don’t know how much they got paid but I ensure you it wasn’t cheap for my employer.
As a nurse you’re a top notch professional and you have a multitude of skills that people will pay for.
If you’re a registered nurse (RN) then maybe you begin doing a training for nursing assistants.
This is one of the best ways that you can monetize your skills even if it’s a side hustle.
Nursing Agency
This is a great opportunity for someone that’s a nursing veteran, meaning you’ve been in the industry for a number of years and met a ton of people.
If you have the connections then this is for you.
The idea behind this business is to connect a company looking for nurses to nurses looking for a place to work. You simply earn a one-time payment or a percentage of the nurses pay for an agreed upon amount of time.
You’ll always have a chance to make great money here because nurses are constantly in high demand. The economy is booming right now and there are still more job opening than there are nursing professionals to fulfill them.
You would even be helping up and coming nurses to find great companies to work for so many would be more than willing to pay you for that.
It would be a win-win.
Hospice Nursing

Many of the nurses I know chose the profession because they want to make a difference in society and they continue to feel that way after many years in the line of work.
It’s easy to understand that many have some sort of interest in tapping into their business desires but don’t want to lose that feeling of making a difference by being stuck in an office or at a computer all day long.
Very understandable.
If that’s the way you feel then you should look into starting a business for hospice nurses. You’ll get the chance to earn a fantastic income and still be making a huge impact on your community.
Most people think that hospice is only for the elder folk but that isn’t the case at all. Maybe you specialize in assisting injured athletes or people injured in serious accidents.
The really cool thing about this opportunity is the little up-front overhead and the fact that it can be grown quickly.
You don’t necessarily need to hire a staff immediately as you could simply do the work yourself and bring on workers as needed.
There will always be elderly people in need of assistance and others that have been injured which means you’ll have plenty of work to keep you business for the future.
Write About Nursing Related Subjects
Maybe you feel the complete opposite from the last business idea we talked about. You’ve spent several years or decades in the profession and you simply want to put your knowledge to use from your house.
This one’s for you.
We’ve talked extensively about the value of nursing skills and knowledge which means there are plenty of writing opportunities out there.
You could communicate that information to others whether it be on the internet or in publications like a magazine. You also have a great option in writing an eBook of certain obstacles or successes you’ve witnessed in your career.
Maybe you even go the formal education route and write some stuff for a digital training.
One of the things I love most about this option is that it can be done part-time to begin with. If you’re still a full-time nurse you don’t have to leave that career path to do this.
Many of the options here can be done for a just a couple hours at night after work.
Once you have enough writing gigs going on you can make the transition into writing full-time if you wish.
You probably won’t make the massive incomes that some of these other ideas can generate but it still has a ton of positives. You get to call the shots because you’re in charge (no boss), you can sleep in every single days because you determine your schedule.
Maybe you take a passion for writing and build out your own blog as a side hustle. After a couple years your blog has grown and you monetize it and collect the massive rewards.
Legal Consulting

Maybe you’re someone that’s seen traumatic mistakes made in an operating room or you’ve witnessed an incorrect diagnosis.
If you want to make a difference in peoples lives that experience these unfortunate circumstances then maybe you should pursue a career as a legal consultant.
Courts are always in need of qualified RN’s to sit in on cases and provide their expertise. Judges and juries aren’t always qualified to make health care related legal judgments on their own so they call on people who are.
If you’ve been in an operating room or similar situation then you absolutely know how things should be done. Unfortunately they’re not always done that way which is where legal consultants come in.
This business should only be undertaken if you have extensive experience in the field.
Little to no overhead is one of the most attractive aspects of this opportunity because you’re simply being paid for your knowledge and experience.
I will say that it would be smart to get some sort of education on the court environment though. You should have some basic knowledge there.
Holistic Nursing

There’s a great opportunity these days to take an approach that isn’t mainstream. If you’re a nurse then you undoubtedly know people that have negative opinions on the health care industry today.
You’ll run into plenty of people who believe the system has been corrupted by top pharmaceutical companies.
As an expert and someone who has spent time in the industry then there’s a decent chance you may feel the exact same way.
Piggy-backing off of that, you have first hand experience of the industry behind closed doors. You can bring inside information to the industry doubters and provide them with a different approach.
The effectiveness of a natural approach is a story for another day. The point is that there are people out there looking for a natural way to heal ailments and not many businesses providing it which means room for you to grow your own business.
You could decide to specialize in acupuncture and be the go-to acupuncture specialist in your area and beyond. There are plenty of opportunities to provide natural solutions to people in need.
Many are looking for help in this area which is great for a new business owner, but the overhead can be quite high so keep that in mind as well.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve devoted your life to the nursing profession and it’s something that you’re passionate about then you can see there are tons of options out there for you to run your own business in the industry.
If none of the paths we’ve discussed grab you then search for another one. There are many more out there than what we’ve gone over here.
At the end of the day you have to find something that you enjoy because that’s one thing being a business owner is all about.
