Getting Your Keywords Right

At Webmarketing123 we can’t emphasize enough the importance of choosing the right keywords. It is almost as important as using ethical practices while performing SEO.

The important thing to consider when qualifying a search term's effectiveness is that it should be searched for by your target market, and is more popular than similar related terms.

There are several tools that can be used to determine if a keyword can really bring you traffic. For example, the Google AdWords Keyword Tool allows you to enter a series of search terms and then produces a comprehensive list of similar words and more focussed search terms that you can use to expand or focus your keyword list.

The 3 step keyword selection process

The process of keyword research involves three stages:

  1. Keyword analysis
  2. Keyword selection
  3. Keyword placement

The stages illustrated above may seem self explanatory, but it’s important to understand what each stage entails.

Keyword analysis entails a check of what keywords people use to search on the web. This does not mean using a set of keywords that you think consumers might use to find your product or service, but carefully analyzing what consumers are currently using to find a smiliar product or service and identifying the obvious keywords.

Keyword selection means selecting a group of most probable search terms, from the list of keywords collected during the keyword analysis stage. This list may need to be modified as your SEO campaign is underway so that your web site is being optimized for the right set of keywords.

Keyword placement means using your pre-identified keywords in the most effective manner. Where to place your keywords is going to depend on the market you are targeting and the search engine that will be ranking your pages. Avoiding unethical practices like font matching, keyword stuffing, or title stuffing, and using the right keyword density will go a long way helping your web site rank competetively on a search engine.

Tips for Perfecting Your SEO Keyword Strategy

While optimizing your page for keywords, remember to place keywords in the:

  • Domain name
  • Title
  • Heading
  • Filename
  • Text link
  • Meta tag

Adhering to the strategies outlined above will go a long way to achieving the right keyword fit.
